Shift Meaning in Baseball

Definition: A shift is a defensive strategy where fielders move out of their normal positions to stand in areas where a specific batter is most likely to hit the ball. Managers use data and history to predict exactly where a player “pulls” the ball and stack the defense on that side.

The most common shift involves moving the shortstop to the right side of second base when a heavy left-handed hitter is at the plate. This makes it much harder for the batter to get a hit through the usual gaps. While shifts were very popular for years, new rules now limit how far players can move, requiring two infielders to be on each side of second base to keep the game more traditional.

Example: The batter hit a hard ground ball that would usually be a hit, but it went straight to the second baseman because of the defensive shift.
