An error is a defensive mistake that allows a runner to reach a base safely. This happens when a fielder fails to make a play that requires only ordinary effort. Errors can include dropping a catch or throwing the ball far over the head of a teammate. The official scorer decides if a play counts as an error or a clean hit. A shortstop fumbles a slow ground ball which allows the runner to reach the first base. This mistake prevents the defense from recording an out and keeps the offensive drive alive. Recording an error does not count as a hit for the batter in the box. High error counts often lead to unearned runs and can cost a team the entire game. Players work on their fielding skills to minimize these costly mistakes during competitive softball play.
