A face mask is a protective piece of equipment worn by players to prevent facial injuries. These metal or plastic guards shield the eyes, nose, and mouth from fast moving balls. Many infielders and pitchers wear them because the ball travels very quickly in the dirt area. The mask provides a clear view of the field while offering a strong physical barrier. A third baseman wears a black steel mask to stay safe during a powerful hitting at-bat. This gear is mandatory for catchers but optional for most other positions on the softball field. Modern designs are lightweight and breathable to ensure the player remains comfortable during hot games. Using a face mask builds confidence in younger players who might fear being hit by the ball. Safety remains the top priority for coaches when teaching beginners the fundamentals of defensive play.
