First Baseman Meaning in Softball

The first baseman is the defensive player stationed near the first base bag on the field. This player receives the most throws from other infielders to record a quick out. First basemen must be skilled at catching balls that bounce low in the dirt. They often stretch their bodies far toward the ball while keeping a foot on the bag. A shortstop throws a wide ball that the first baseman catches with a stretch. This action completes the out before the runner can touch the first base bag. Having a tall or flexible player at this position is a common team strategy. This role is essential for finishing most ground ball plays during a standard game. A reliable first baseman prevents many hits from becoming safe base arrivals for runners.
