A flex player is a defensive specialist who does not occupy a spot in the batting order. This player appears on the lineup card in the tenth position for the team. The flex player works with the designated player to share a single game spot. While the designated player hits, the flex player stays on the field to defend. A starting pitcher acts as the flex player while someone else bats for them. This allows the pitcher to focus entirely on throwing without the pressure of hitting. The coach can move the flex into the batting lineup if the strategy changes. This role provides great flexibility for managing player energy and specific skill sets during play. Most competitive teams use a flex player to strengthen their overall defensive performance.
