A force play is a situation where a runner is legally required to advance. This condition exists when the batter hits a fair ball and moves to first. All runners behind the batter must move forward to make room for the new runner. The defense can record an out by simply touching the base with the ball. A ground ball is hit with the bases loaded during the third inning. Every runner must run to the next base because the batter is coming. The catcher touches home plate to get the lead runner out on the force. This type of play allows for multiple outs if the defense moves quickly enough. Understanding force plays helps runners know when they must sprint without waiting for a signal.
