A gap is an open space in the outfield between two of the defensive players. These areas exist between the left fielder and center fielder or the center and right. Hitters try to drive the ball into these holes to gain extra bases on a hit. A ball that rolls to the fence through a gap usually results in a double. A batter hits a line drive exactly between the center fielder and the right fielder. Both outfielders must run toward the ball while the batter rounds the first base bag safely. This gap is the most difficult area for the defense to cover effectively during the game. Proper defensive alignment helps minimize the size of these gaps based on the hitter’s power. Speed is the most important asset for outfielders when they try to close these gaps.
