The glove hand is the specific hand that a softball player uses to wear their mitt. For a right handed player, the glove hand is the left hand on their body. This hand is responsible for catching all incoming balls and securing them for a throw. Players must develop strength and coordination in this hand to make difficult catches while running. A shortstop reaches out with the glove hand to snag a fast moving ground ball. The player then uses the other hand to pull the ball out and throw. Catchers use a specially padded mitt on this hand to protect against very high speed pitches. Proper positioning of the glove hand is the first thing coaches teach to young beginner players. Developing a soft touch with this hand prevents the ball from bouncing out of the glove.
