Half Inning Meaning in Softball

A half inning is the period of play where one team bats until three outs occur. Two half innings combine to form a single full inning of a standard softball game. The visiting team always bats during the top half of the inning for the duration. The home team takes their turn to bat during the bottom half of the period. A team scores three runs before the third out is recorded by the defensive players. The teams then switch positions on the field to start the next half of play.
