In-flight describes a batted ball that has not yet touched the ground or a fielder. The ball remains in this state from the moment of contact until it lands. Defensive players attempt to catch these balls to record an immediate out for the team. If a fielder catches the ball cleanly the batter is out regardless of the distance. A center fielder tracks a high fly ball while it is still in-flight above the grass. The outfielder secures the ball in the glove before it can hit the playing surface. Runners must remain on their original bases until the catch occurs during this specific play. This term applies to fly balls, line drives, and pop-ups during a live softball game. Mastering the ability to track balls in-flight is a core skill for every defensive outfielder.
