Knuckleball Meaning in Softball

A knuckleball is a specialized pitch that has almost no spin as it travels through air. The pitcher grips the ball with the fingertips or knuckles rather than the finger pads. This lack of rotation causes the ball to dance and move unpredictably toward the plate. It is very difficult for batters to time their swing against this erratic movement. A pitcher releases a knuckleball that wobbles from side to side as the batter watches. The ball drops suddenly at the last second and the hitter misses the swinging attempt. This pitch is rare in fastpitch softball because it is extremely difficult to master correctly. Catchers often struggle to catch this pitch because the path changes so many times. It requires a very light touch and perfect finger strength to execute the pitch successfully.
