The mound is the designated circular area in the center of the field for pitchers. Unlike baseball this area in softball is a flat circle rather than a raised hill. The center of the circle contains a white rubber plate where the pitcher stands. Pitchers must remain within this eight foot radius while they prepare for each individual delivery. A pitcher stands on the rubber within the mound to begin the first inning. Both feet must stay inside the chalk lines of the circle during the start. This area serves as the primary stage for the battle between pitcher and batter. Defensive players often gather at the mound to discuss strategy during a brief timeout. Keeping the mound area level ensures that the pitcher maintains a safe and stable landing.
