Obstruction occurs when a defensive player hinders a runner who is moving along bases. This happens if a fielder blocks a base or a path without possessing the ball. Defenders must leave a clear lane for the runner unless they are making a catch. If contact happens the umpire will signal a violation and allow the play to finish. A catcher blocks the home plate while waiting for a throw from the far outfield. The runner slides into the catcher and the umpire immediately calls the obstruction penalty. This rule is essential for preventing dangerous collisions and ensuring smooth movement for the runners. Players must learn to stay out of the base paths when not actively playing. Obstruction calls can change the momentum of a game by awarding extra bases to hitters.
