Definition: A strike is a pitch that the batter either swings at and misses, or a pitch that passes through the “strike zone” without the batter swinging. If a batter gets three strikes during one turn at bat, they are out.
A strike can also happen if the batter hits the ball into “foul territory,” but this only counts for the first and second strikes. A strike is essentially a victory for the pitcher, as it puts them one step closer to removing the batter from the game. The goal for every pitcher is to throw strikes consistently to keep the hitters from reaching base.
Example: The pitcher threw a fast ball right over the middle of the plate for a called strike because the batter didn’t swing.
