Pivot Meaning in Softball

A pivot describes the action of an infielder turning to make a fast second throw. This most commonly happens during a double play at the second base bag in play. The fielder must catch the ball and rotate the body toward first base instantly. Success depends on quick footwork and a smooth transition of the ball from glove. A second baseman catches a flip and pivots to throw the ball to first. This rotation allows the player to generate power for the throw while moving very quickly.
