Plate Umpire Meaning in Softball

The plate umpire is the lead official who stands directly behind the catcher during games. This person is responsible for calling balls and strikes for every pitch thrown to batter. The plate umpire also makes final decisions on plays occurring at the home plate area. They wear protective gear including a mask and chest protector for safety from balls. The umpire shouts strike three and signals with a fist to record an out. This official also tracks the lineup and handles any substitutions made by the team coaches. Their position offers the best view of the strike zone and the entire field. The plate umpire maintains the flow of the game and ensures all rules are followed. They are the primary authority for every fair and foul call near the plate.
