Definition: A strikeout occurs when a batter receives three strikes during their turn at bat, resulting in an out. This happens if the batter swings and misses at three pitches, or if they fail to swing at pitches that the umpire determines were inside the strike zone.
A strikeout is the most direct way for a pitcher to get a batter out because it doesn’t require any help from the other fielders. While a foul ball can count as strike one or strike two, it cannot count as strike three unless the batter attempted a bunt. In baseball box scores and stadium signs, a strikeout is often represented by the letter “K.”
Example: The pitcher dominated the final inning, securing the win by getting a strikeout against the league’s best hitter.
