Pop Fly Meaning in Softball

A pop fly is a batted ball that travels very high but stay in infield. These hits have a steep vertical path and do not travel far toward outfield. Infielders usually have plenty of time to get under the ball for a catch. A pop fly that is caught results in an immediate out for the hitter. A batter hits a weak pop fly that peaks directly over the pitcher’s mound. The shortstop calls for the ball and catches it safely in the leather glove. This type of hit often occurs when the batter swings under a fast pitch. It is one of the easiest plays for a defense to record a success. Runners must stay near their bases to avoid being doubled off after the catch.
