A putout is a defensive statistic credited to the player who records an actual out. This happens when a fielder catches a fly ball or tags a baserunner directly. It also occurs when a fielder touches a base to complete a force play out. The first baseman receives a putout for catching a throw to beat the runner. This number reflects how many times a player was the final person in play. Catchers receive many putouts by catching third strikes that result in a swinging out. Outfielders earn putouts by securing fly balls before they hit the grassy outfield surface. This metric helps coaches evaluate the defensive activity and reliability of each specific player. High putout totals usually indicate a player who is very active in the field.
