Shortstop Meaning in Softball

The shortstop is the defensive player positioned between the second and third base. This player is often the most athletic and skilled defender on the entire team. They must cover a large area of the infield and make very long throws. The shortstop is responsible for catching grounders and covering second base on steals. A shortstop dives to stop a hard hit ball in the hole area. The player then jumps up and fires a strike to the first base. This position requires quick reflexes and a very strong and accurate throwing arm. Most double plays involve the shortstop as a key part of the exchange. They serve as the leader of the infield defense during a live game.
