Sling Shot Meaning in Softball

A sling shot is a pitching style where the arm moves in a straight arc. Unlike the windmill motion, the arm does not complete a full three hundred sixty degree circle. The pitcher pulls the arm back and snaps it forward like a physical slingshot. This delivery is common in modified pitch leagues and some recreational softball games. A pitcher uses a sling shot motion to deliver a strike to the batter. This style offers more control for beginners but generally produces less velocity than a windmill. The ball travels in a direct path toward the plate from the hip level. It is an effective way to learn the basics of underhand pitching for new athletes.
