Stealing Meaning in Softball

Stealing is the act of a runner advancing to the next base during a pitch. The runner must wait for the ball to leave the pitcher’s hand before moving. Success depends on the speed of the runner and the reaction of the catcher. If the runner reaches the base before being tagged, the steal is successful. A runner on first base steals second while the pitcher delivers a high ball. The catcher throws to the second baseman but the runner slides in safely. This strategy puts pressure on the defense and moves the runner into scoring position. It requires great awareness of the pitcher’s timing and a very fast starting sprint. Stealing is a primary way to advance bases without needing a hit from the batter.
