Substitute Meaning in Softball

A substitute is a player who enters the game to replace a starting team member. This change can be made for either offensive hitting or defensive fielding purposes. Coaches must report all substitutions to the plate umpire to make them official. A substitute allows a team to adapt to the changing needs of the game. A coach sends a new fielder into the game to play left field. The original player moves to the bench while the substitute takes the defensive spot. This person must follow all league rules regarding re-entry and batting order positions. Substitutions are vital for managing player fatigue and using specialized skills in key moments. Every player on the roster must be ready to serve as a substitute.
