A triple play is a rare defensive event that results in three outs. This play happens during a single continuous action following a batted ball into play. It requires a specific situation with multiple runners on the bases and no outs. The defense must coordinate three quick throws or tags to retire every offensive runner. A shortstop catches a low line drive and touches second base for the second out. The fielder then fires the ball to first base to complete the triple play. This incredible feat immediately ends the half inning for the frustrated hitting team. Successful triple plays often require a combination of defensive skill and a bit of luck. Fans celebrate these moments because they occur very infrequently in professional or amateur softball games.
