The wheel play is a defensive strategy used to defend against a bunt. The first and third basemen charge toward the plate as the pitcher delivers ball. At the same time the middle infielders move to cover the vacated bases. This coordinated rotation helps the defense record an out on a short hit. A batter bunts the ball while the infield performs the fast wheel play. The third baseman scoops the ball and throws to the covering shortstop at base. This tactic requires perfect timing and clear communication between all of the infielders. It prevents the offense from successfully using a sacrifice bunt to move runners. Teams practice the wheel play to handle high pressure situations near the home plate.
