Double Meaning in Baseball

Definition: A double is a hit where the batter reaches second base safely without the help of a fielding error. It is often called a “two-base hit” because the runner passes first base and stops at second.

A double usually happens when a batter hits the ball hard into the gaps between outfielders or down the foul lines. If the ball bounces over the outfield fence after hitting the ground, it is called a “ground-rule double,” and the batter is automatically awarded second base.

Example: The batter hit a sharp line drive into left-center field and easily reached second base for a double.
