Definition: An ejection occurs when an umpire officially removes a player, coach, or manager from the game for breaking rules or behaving poorly. Once ejected, that person must leave the field and the dugout immediately and cannot return for the rest of the game.
Ejections most commonly happen when a person argues too aggressively with an umpire about a judgment call, such as a ball or strike. While common in baseball, an ejection is a serious penalty because the team must find a replacement for that player or continue without their manager’s guidance.
Example: The manager was handed an ejection after he ran onto the field to shout at the umpire about a close play at home plate.
