Definition: Extra innings are additional rounds of play used to determine a winner when the score is tied at the end of the standard nine innings. The game continues one inning at a time until one team is leading at the end of a full inning.
In professional baseball, games cannot end in a tie, so teams play until a winner is decided, no matter how long it takes. During extra innings, the pressure increases because every single run scored could potentially end the game immediately if the home team takes the lead.
Example: After nine innings of play and the score stuck at 2-2, the game went into extra innings to decide the winner.
