Definition: On-Base Percentage (OBP) is a statistic that measures how often a batter reaches base safely without making an out. It counts hits, walks, and being hit by a pitch, then divides that total by the number of times the player stepped up to bat.
OBP is considered one of the most important ways to judge a player’s value because it shows how good they are at avoiding outs. While a high batting average only counts hits, a high OBP shows that a player is disciplined enough to take a walk and help their team score.
Example: Even though he didn’t get many hits this week, the player’s on-base percentage remained high because he walked three times.
