Definition: Outfielders are the three defensive players—the left fielder, center fielder, and right fielder—who stand in the large grassy area farthest from home plate. Their main job is to catch long fly balls and chase down hits that get past the infielders.
Outfielders must be fast runners to cover a lot of ground and have strong throwing arms to get the ball back to the bases quickly. The center fielder is usually the fastest of the three because they have the most area to cover and often act as the “captain” of the outfield.
Example: The outfielder sprinted to the warning track and made a leaping catch to save a home run.
