Extra time is an additional period played to break a tie match score. This happens only in knockout competitions where a definite winner is required. It usually consists of two halves lasting five minutes each for the players. If the score remains tied, a second period of extra time starts. This phase tests the endurance and mental strength of every person on court. A match goes into extra time after finishing level at full time. The players must continue competing despite being exhausted from sixty minutes of play. Coaches use their final tactical instructions to motivate the team for this period. Scoring a goal in extra time provides a massive psychological boost for teams. Most fans consider extra time the most exciting part of a handball tournament.
