A free throw is a restart awarded to a team after a minor foul. The referee gives this throw to the team that was fouled by the opponent. Most free throws take place at the nine meter dotted line on the court. The defense must stay three meters away from the player taking the throw. All attacking players must be outside the nine meter line before the start. A playmaker passes the ball to a teammate immediately after a defensive foul. This restart allows the offensive team to maintain their momentum and scoring pressure. Players do not have to wait for a whistle if the ball is set. The free throw is the most common way to restart play in handball. It ensures the game continues fairly after an opponent breaks a minor technical rule.
