A staggered formation is a defensive setup where players stand at different depths. Some defenders stay near the six meter while others move forward to pressure. This uneven line disrupts the passing lanes and the rhythm of the offense. It is a more aggressive version of the standard six zero zone defense. The formation forces the attacking team to play further away from the goal. A team uses a staggered formation to stop a dangerous long range. This setup requires excellent communication and constant movement from every defensive court. Players must be ready to drop back or step up at any time. Coaches use this to create a chaotic environment for the opposing offensive unit. A staggered defense is very effective against teams that rely on structured plays.
