Body alignment describes the straightness of a diver’s form from head to toe. The athlete must maintain a vertical line during takeoff and the water entry. Proper alignment reduces the splash and increases the overall score from judges. This requires the diver to engage their core, glutes, and leg muscles. Any arch in the back or bend in the knees breaks the line. Good alignment is most visible when the diver is in the straight position. One example of body alignment is the vertical entry after a somersault. Judges look for a perfectly straight body that is perpendicular to the water. This technique allows the diver to slice through the surface without a sound. Achieving this form requires a high level of physical discipline and training. Excellent alignment makes a dive look effortless and technically superior to others.
