An entry angle is the specific slope of the body when hitting water. The ideal angle for almost every competitive dive is exactly 90 degrees vertical. This verticality ensures the diver creates the smallest possible splash upon their entry. If the angle is too short or too long, a large splash occurs. One example of an entry angle is a diver entering the pool straight. Judges deduct points for any visible lean or tilt during this final phase. The athlete must stretch their body and lock their arms to maintain this line. This requires a perfect sense of timing to kick out from a somersault. A clean entry angle is the mark of a highly skilled and technical diver. This detail often decides the winner in a very close and tough competition.
