Heel drive is a technical movement where the diver thrusts their heels upward. This action occurs immediately after the feet leave the springboard or platform surface. The forceful kick helps initiate the backward rotation needed for somersaulting maneuvers. A strong heel drive provides the necessary momentum to complete multiple flips quickly. This technique is especially critical for the backward and inward groups of dives. The diver must time this kick perfectly with the upward spring of the board. One example of heel drive is the start of a back double somersault. Judges look for a powerful and clean snap of the legs during takeoff. Maintaining a rigid body during the drive ensures the rotation remains very stable. Proper execution allows the athlete to reach the peak height of their flight path. This skill is a fundamental requirement for all high-level competitive rotating dives.
