A gutter ball refers to a bowling ball that drops into the side channels before hitting any pins. These channels run along both sides of the lane to catch off-target throws. Therefore, any ball that enters the gutter results in a score of zero for that specific roll. Beginners often struggle with gutter balls because they release the ball with too much or too little speed. For example, his ball curved too early and ended up as a gutter ball in the right channel. A gutter ball is a missed opportunity that fails to knock down any standing pins.
