Kata-Gatame is a shoulder pin where the attacker traps the arm. The player uses the side of the head to lock the limb. One arm circles the neck of the opponent to grab the hands. This creates a tight triangle around the shoulder and the neck area. The attacker stays on the side with legs spread for balance. This position prevents the defender from turning over or sitting up. A player wins by holding this pin for the required match time. This technique provides excellent control over the upper body of the opponent. Keeping the chest pressed down limits the defensive options of the player. The attacker must drive the shoulder forward to maximize the pinning pressure. This hold remains a favorite for its high level of physical security.
