Kesa-Gaeshi is a counter technique used to escape a specific scarf hold. The defender waits for the attacker to shift their weight forward. A sudden roll toward the head of the attacker flips the position. The player uses the momentum of the opponent to gain the top. One game example shows a pinned player reversing the entire hold. This move requires the defender to bridge the hips off the floor. Success depends on the timing of the bridge and the roll. The attacker loses balance and falls over the shoulder of the defender. This reversal allows the person on the bottom to start attacking. Strategy involves feeling the center of gravity of the opponent shift. This skill helps players stay calm when trapped in a pin.
