Kesa-Gatame is a scarf hold pin performed from the side of the opponent. The attacker sits next to the ribs and wraps one arm. This arm goes around the neck while the other holds the sleeve. The legs spread wide on the mat to create a stable base. This position uses the weight of the chest to pin the defender. One game example involves holding the opponent for twenty seconds to win. This hold is one of the first pins taught to beginners. The attacker must pull the arm of the opponent upward tightly. This action keeps the shoulder off the ground and limits escaping. Strategy involves keeping the head low to avoid being rolled over. This pin remains a very popular choice in modern judo matches.
