O-Goshi-Gaeshi Meaning in Judo

O-Goshi-Gaeshi is a counter technique used specifically against a hip throw attempt. The defender feels the attacker starting to turn for a major throw. Instead of being lifted, the defender blocks the hip with the hand. A sudden shift in weight allows the defender to reverse the momentum. One game example shows a player scoring after being attacked with O-Goshi. This move requires the defender to stay very stable and heavy. Success depends on reacting the moment the attacker turns the back. Strategy involves pushing the hips of the attacker to break their balance. This reversal allows a player to turn a defensive moment into points. It teaches athletes how to use the power of an opponent.
