O-Soto-Gaeshi Meaning in Judo

O-Soto-Gaeshi is a counter technique used against a major outer reap attempt. The defender feels the attacker starting to sweep the leg from behind. Instead of falling, the defender shifts their weight to the other foot. A quick reversal of force allows the defender to sweep the attacker. One game example shows a player scoring after being attacked with a sweep. This move requires the defender to have excellent balance and very fast reactions. Success depends on the timing of the shift in the center of gravity. Strategy involves using the momentum of the attacker to finish the counter move. This technique turns a dangerous situation into a winning opportunity for the player. It teaches athletes how to stay grounded under a strong physical attack.
