Okuri-Eri-Jime is a sliding lapel strangle performed from behind the opponent. The attacker reaches around the neck to grab the far collar. The other hand pulls the opposite lapel down to create tension. This action restricts the blood flow of the defender during the match. One game example shows a player winning by submission from the back. The attacker must stay close to the back of the opponent. Proper execution requires the wrists to remain straight and the elbows low. Success depends on the depth of the initial grip on the collar. Strategy involves using the legs to hook the hips of the defender. This move is a very common and effective way to finish. It remains a fundamental skill for all judo practitioners.
