Sukui-Nage Meaning in Judo

Sukui-Nage is a scooping throw that targets the legs of the opponent. The attacker reaches down to grab the thighs or the belt area. A lifting motion combined with a backward pull trips the standing defender. This action sends the opponent over the shoulder or to the side. One game example involves a player scooping the legs during a counter attack. This technique requires the attacker to have a very low body position. Success depends on the coordination between the lift and the hip drive. The defender loses balance because their feet are pulled from the mat. Strategy involves waiting for the opponent to lean back before the scoop. This throw demonstrates the effective use of hand leverage against the legs.
