Sumi-Otoshi Meaning in Judo

Sumi-Otoshi is a corner drop throw that relies on a hand pull. The attacker pushes and pulls the opponent toward a rear corner angle. This motion disrupts the balance of the defender without using any legs. The opponent falls backward onto the mat from the force of hands. One game example involves a player scoring by pushing the opponent off balance. This technique requires the attacker to have very sensitive and active wrists. Success depends on finding the weak point in the stance of the defender. The player must use a sudden and sharp motion to achieve the fall. Strategy involves moving the opponent in a circle to create the opening. This throw is a classic example of winning through pure technical timing.
