Tsurikomi-Goshi Meaning in Judo

Tsurikomi-Goshi is a lifting pulling hip throw performed by dropping the center. The attacker pulls the lapel upward while turning the back to the defender. This motion requires the player to bend the knees deeply under the opponent. The attacker then straightens the legs to lift the defender over the hip. One game example involves a player throwing an opponent for a full ippon score. This technique requires the player to have very strong legs and back muscles. Success depends on the high lifting action of the arm holding the collar. Proper execution creates a pivot point that launches the opponent onto the mat. Strategy involves catching the defender as they move forward or stand very upright. This move is a fundamental example of using leverage through a vertical lift.
