Utsuri-Goshi Meaning in Judo

Utsuri-Goshi is a shifting hip throw used as a counter technique. The defender lifts the attacker into the air during a throw. The player then shifts the hips to change the throwing direction. This action results in the attacker being tossed onto the mat. One game example shows a player reversing a hip throw to score. This move requires the player to have great strength and balance. Success depends on the timing of the hip shift mid-air. The defender becomes the attacker by taking control of the center. Proper execution involves a strong rotation of the torso and the arms. Strategy involves using the lift of the opponent to set up. This technique demonstrates the ability to adapt during a fast exchange.
