Gyaku Zuki describes the reverse punch delivered from the back side of the body. A student punches with the hand opposite to the leg that is forward. The power comes from a sharp and fast rotation of the hips. This strike travels a shorter distance and often catches an opponent by surprise. A practitioner uses this punch as a counter-attack after blocking a strike. Keeping the front knee stable allows for a more powerful hip twist. This technique represents one of the most effective scoring strikes in karate. The feet stay firmly planted on the ground to transfer energy upward. A student exhales sharply upon impact to increase the force of the blow. The punching arm extends fully while the chest remains facing the target. This punch requires less space than a lunge punch and works well in close. Mastery of the hip rotation is the key to generating high levels of force.
