Uraken Uchi is a backfist strike using the top of knuckles. The user snaps the fist outward like a quick whip. This move targets the face or the side of the head. It relies on the speed of the elbow hinge motion. A competitor uses this strike to score a fast point. The fist returns to the starting position immediately after the hit. This rapid retraction prevents the opponent from catching the attacking arm. The practitioner must keep the shoulder relaxed for maximum snapping speed. Using a horizontal or vertical path allows for different attack angles. This strike works best as a distracting or stinging lead attack. It requires very little space to generate an effective hitting force. Backfist strikes are common in sport karate for their high speed. Mastery of this move helps a fighter maintain a fast pace.
