Kime is the brief tensing of the body at impact. The practitioner focuses all their energy into a single point of contact. This action creates a sharp and powerful finish for every strike. It distinguishes a weak motion from a true martial arts technique. A fighter snaps a punch and freezes for a split second. This sudden tension allows the force to transfer into the target area. The muscles must relax immediately after the strike to allow movement. Total body coordination is necessary to achieve this high level of power. The student exhales sharply to help contract the core muscles during impact. This technique makes the movements look crisp and feel very strong. Without this focus the strikes would lack the necessary stopping power. It is a fundamental concept for all advanced karate students to master.
